Our Exhibition Hall at Borderway Mart Renamed in Honour of Inspirational Figure in the Company’s History

As part of H&H’s 50 years celebrations at its Borderway site, on Friday 1st November, during Borderway Agri Expo, the Exhibition Hall at was officially named in honour of one of the company’s founding figures, Dick Harrison.

In a special ceremony attended by his daughter, Dawn Harrison, a former director of H&H Group Plc, the Hall was officially renamed The Dick Harrison Showhall.  Dawn unveiled a commemorative plaque and clock, paying tribute to her father’s legacy in the livestock auctioneering industry.  The clock plaque carries one of Dick’s most favoured phrases: “If it moves – we’ll sell it.” The naming of the hall is part of a series of events marking the 50-year milestone.

Built in 2010, the Exhibition Hall is used on a regular basis for a variety of important events, including Borderway Agri Expo, Dairy Expo, and key livestock and machinery sales, commercial and pedigree shows.  Beyond its agricultural significance, the hall has also served the broader community, hosting everything from external exhibitions, toy fairs, dog shows, and poultry auctions to weddings and society dinners.

Dawn Harrison, speaking at the unveiling, reflected on her father’s legacy: “Dad would have been delighted to see the development of Borderway into a world-class auction and exhibition centre. He believed that a good deal was one where all parties walked away happy, and I know he would have been pleased to see the continued dedication of the H&H team in making Borderway the success it is today. I’m thrilled to share this moment with my sister Anne, and although our mother, who was a staunch supporter of Dad, couldn’t be here, her spirit is certainly with us.”

Speaking afterwards Will Hamilton, Chairman said: “Dick Harrison, whose connection with H&H began long before his official start date—having been involved as a schoolboy—worked tirelessly throughout his career to grow and support the firm. He remained deeply engaged with the business until his sad and untimely death few a weeks short of his planned retirement in April 1988. His influence and values continue to shape the company, making the renaming of the Exhibition Hall a fitting tribute to his ongoing influence here.”

Harrison & Hetherington, founded in 1870, has grown from a local livestock auctioneering company to one of the UK’s most significant agricultural service providers. The Borderway Mart, established in 1974, remains the firm’s flagship site, hosting premier livestock sales and agricultural events that attract global attention.

The renaming of the Exhibition Hall is a reminder of the company's rich history and commitment to the farming community, as it continues to evolve while staying true to its roots.
