The Old Cumbria Gazetteer includes a map of the area published in 1774, with a rather matter-of-fact description of Holmrook as, ‘a house with an avenue of trees and vineyard,’ and a later painting of Holmrook Hall dated 1816 with a visitor’s glowing description of the setting: ‘I never saw a lovelier spot… of all the places I ever saw, I think I should like to live there the best’.
