Farmers and landowners are invited to discover how to gain environmental benefits without losing productivity

We are inviting farmers and landowners from across the North of England to spend a day at Durham’s Rainton Meadows Nature Reserve, to find out how woodland and wetland management can help them gain environmental support without reducing their productivity.

Guests are invited to join our team at Rainton Meadows, Houghton-le-Spring, on Tuesday 5th September for a morning of key environmental grants updates, and guidance on forestry and woodland schemes. After lunch, the afternoon focus of the day will be on the opportunities to introduce Biodiversity Net Gain and Nutrient Neutrality practices to maximise environmental gains without reducing production capacity.

The event is being hosted by our Forestry and Environment Team, and those giving input and advising throughout the day will include Tracey Jackson, Head of Environment & Forestry; Sarah Radcliffe, Forestry Manager; Will Livesey, Environment &  Forestry Adviser; and Chris Gill Farm Business & Environment Advisor.

The Government’s new farming policy is now very much focused on supporting farmers with environment-orientated grants and as such farmers and landowners are being encouraged to provide more environmental benefits. What we will practically demonstrate at Rainton Meadows is exactly what grants and support are available, and how, through the creation of a range of different habitats including woodland and meadows, these environmental objectives can be achieved without reducing stock numbers.

To give those attending a clear picture of what they can implement on their own land, we will walk through the mature woodlands and meadowland at Rainton Meadows demonstrating practical examples. We will also explain how trees can be introduced, onto land, provide up-to-date details on current available grants that support these aims, and what the future will hold for Biodiversity Net Gain requirements in planning applications.
